A student drew a rabbit and lost control of it
2006, Beijing. It got out of the blog within a week and never came back.
Momo Wang was an undergrad at the Communication University of China. She drew a white rabbit with two dashes for eyes, no mouth, and arms that flailed like wet noodles, then posted it and went back to class.
September 6, 2006. That's the birthday. Nobody wrote a brief, nobody ran a campaign, nobody owned anything yet.
It hit QQ first. Then MSN. Then WeChat, KakaoTalk, Zalo, every messenger that mattered in Asia. People were firing this thing off fifteen times a day without ever learning its name. No catchphrase, no lore, no punchline — just a rabbit doing an entire mood with its shoulders.
The west got Trollface. China got a rabbit that outlived four different chat apps and ended up on plushies, KFC toys, an Instax camera, a Times Square billboard and a Warner Bros. TV deal. Same energy, bigger country.
He still hasn't opened his eyes. Honestly he's never needed to.
